Removable HD

Howdy listers,

I've got a server with a removable IDE hard drive tray for backups. I've created a simple menu interface for the users to use to unmount the drive prior to removal and remout after replacement. I've noticed on numerous (far too numerous) occasions, depending upon who performs this function, they forget to use the interface. At worst, a reboot gets them back, and one of the more sophisticated users on the site usually gets them running again without having to call me. There don't seem to be any lasting ill-effects from this filesystem-wise, but I'm wondering if they're slowly killing the filesystem by doing this again and again. Should I periodically waste and rebuild the filesystem to be safe? Any other suggestions (short of physical abuse)?

Thanks,

Jedd
