Did you make sure that there is no firewall ON the server and no firewall BETWEEN the client and the server?

Did you try this on the client machine or on the server machine?

Does the result differ on both?

Since the "netstat" output you posted before showed something listening on port 5432 on the server machine, it still looks like a network or firewall problem.

Have you talked to the people who manage your network?
