You are correct that killing the zombie processes (kill [-9] <pid of zombie>) won't do anything. However, if their parent process is something other than PID 1 (init), you can (in general) get rid of the zombie by killing the parent process. To get rid of zombies whose parent is init, you will need to reboot.

No, you cannot.
