Safenet has a chip called the SafeXL4850 that is 2.4gbps pattern search engine. It is programmed using regular expressions and had been used in IDS applications.

It's deterministic in its search times, independent of number of rules, complexity of rules, packet types and packet sizes. Number and complexity of rules impact the amount of memory required to store the tables.
