RE: Filtering DHCP Assignments by MAC Address

Jake,

With Windows you can assign dhcp to a mac but it does not always work because if a request comes in and the client is not online even if you have assigned that dhcp address to a specific mac address it will still hand it out. My suggestion is to run a Unix DHCP server because it will hold those dhcp addresses to that mac and only let those macs have that address. I know that this is not comforting but it has been the only way that I have found to do this.

Subject: Filtering DHCP Assignments by MAC Address

We have just converted to DHCP and would like to limit the ability of people
to plug in to the network without authorization. In Win2K is it possible to
limit DHCP assignments by MAC address or some other mechanism to keep rogue
machines out? My server admins have been researching this but can't find a
method to achieve what we want. Thanks.

Jake
