If I recall correctly, at one point Virus Bulletin {http://www.virusbtn.com/} maintained a database of the different AV software virus names cross referenced.

I want to say that it was called VGREP.

I do not know if they maintain this software anymore, or they might have moved it online.

True. I expect that Trojan.Zasil is a name that someone at Symantec made up all by themselves, and I'm pretty sure that Downloader-BN.dr is a name that someone at McAfee made up all by themselves...

Indeed, it looks as though most AV companies made up a different name all by themselves.
