Not really. Most scanners do not decode the ASCII-Attachments and thus detect only the obvious viruses.

As an example, I scanned my archive of quarantined EMails (130 Files)

sophos sweep: 1 detection, 2 if using -f -archive fsav: 3 detections
f-prot: 123 detctions
antivir: 14 detections (using -all)
