Hmm, pretty much if it was the truth! Oh ... I wonder did you put the '-mime' option ?
AFAIK this options was added since version 3.58 in order to scan mime encoded
attachments in mails. If it is not present - no virus is found. Before saying ANYTHING else I recommend you use the following command line: sweep -mime -nb -f -rec -sc -archive name_of_the_email
