Malware season?

I'm brand new to security, hoping to learn from this list.

I've been loosely following the emergence of major new malware for about a year and a half and have noticed that, for the short time I've been paying attention, it often seems to hit in spurts.

Is it just my imagination? Do any of you seasoned professionals notice patterns with the release of new malware? Does it occur more during certain times of the year or in certain political climates or around certain holidays, etc.?
