It populates /dev with all the nice entries you'd like to have handy, stuff like entries for your disk partitions, etc. I'd list them but I don't have a FreeBSD handy.

If you're REALLY curious, do this:

# cd /dev
# ls
# /dist/dev/MAKEDEV std
# ls

and see all the stuff that appeared. ;)
