oh god, have you ever untarred something in you home and compiled things using your stuff instead of the system one? and you need to be root for this?

have you ever heard about configure and its dozens of options? this would be of great help in this context, you can even specify alternative paths to search for headers. of course you software needs to use configure. i talked about it only to make an example, -I and -L switches of gcc really make all the magics.

so we disagree in the concept of "good engineering practice". it is not a great matter :)

ok, so we need to make a tree like this:

/usr/include/libnet/1.0.x/libnet.h,..
/usr/include/libnet/1.1.x/libnet.h,..
/usr/lib/libnet1.0.x.a
/usr/lib/libnet1.1.x.a

hmmm... what a nice filesystem. if all the software was engineered as good as this... oh well, i don't like it. i don't give it a single chance.

said that, please do whatever you want.

happy hacking.
