It's not just the slow nominal rate of the connection, it's also the
large latencies involved, that make X forwarding over such links a pain.
Compression doesn't improve the latency. Also, there's no point in
doing this when forwarding just the HTTP proxy traffic is perfectly
doable and much more effective.
