Thought I had better close this query out, for the benefit of anybody else hitting this:

I got only one reply, from Stephen Smoogen, which put me straight onto the right track. I had been correct in assuming it was a shell implementation problem, but had failed to take the next logical step. Installing Bash (version 2.05b, if it matters) fixed my problem. Stephen also told me he usually had to install configure 2.54+, which I take to be GNU's autoconf, and then do an autoreconf, but I didn't need to do that (which was lucky, because I couldn't get autconf to configure either!).
