Oh sorry I forgot to tell you that the .pub key needs to be copied to the authorized_keys2 file, unless you specify the alternative in the sshd_config.
Yes the docs are a bit confusing, primarly think of my machine needs to login the remote untrusted machine, I trust my machine (private key), and I want to tell remote machine that I can trust it so copy public key to it.
