You say you're using "VAC 60day trial". I'm not sure what that is -- a C compiler? Does it sleep for 60 seconds on each file compiled, or something? Running ./configure compiles dozens of tiny little C files, so if each one takes a minute due to "crippleware", I could easily imagine ./configure taking a horrendously long time.
