I ran "CC=cc ./configure" on 3.2.3 (IRIX64 6.5.17f, configure picks -n32) on a Fuel, 7.3.1.2 compilers) and can now confirm your results. :(

I then compiled 3.2.2 in the exactly same manner. It doesn't work either.

I'll post about non-64 results (IRIX 6.5.19f on O2) in a bit.
