Thank you very much for responding David. I did find the problem.... Since I did not have a customized sshd_conf file when i installed openssh-server-3.6.1p2-4mdk.i586 it over wrote the config...right when I was in it!
The new default to the mdk ssh package is

PermitRootLogin = no
so I changed it to yes, then I did receive a lot of suggestions that it was not a safe thing to do allowing root to ssh in, so I changed it back and I have begun using the su command once in.
