I tried your suggestiong about a bad dot file, but couldn't find anything strange. I tried removing everything from my .bashrc and .bash_profile files except a basic path statement; no luck there.

My ssh configuration files are just the basic ones from the Debian installation. The only thing I can think of is that the Debian maintainers might have mucked with the code, but that seems like a long shot -- I can't see any reports of any similar problems on the Debian mailing lists. Still, I could try to build ssh from source.
