I hope you didn't try using dselect (<rant>'cause it must be the most mind-scrambling piece of software ever written</rant>). The (IMvHO) best policy for installing debian is:

Installation always worked for me that way, even on my notebook.

Note: when dealing with Debian you will have to have at least some basic

      knowledge of how Linux works, because it won't always take you by
      the hand.
