        You have not explained what you want to do, is this for a production system is this just for testing? Here are some tools that I know of.

        If you want something that will just trace system calls then you have, strace under Linux, ktrace and truss under FreeBSD and truss under Solaris.

        There is a tool for Linux which give you more analysis power called LTT:
