Well, I can run snort with 'snort -d -c /etc/snort/snort.conf -i fxp0 -u snort -g snort -D'

so specifying a configuration file isn't the problem. The problem im encountering is using the config keyword _within_ the configuration file. If -c is broken, snort as an IDS is broken :) since without picking a config file, snort will just be a sniffer.
