Thanks for that MS SQL suggestion. I'm not planning to install SQL server, as I'm not familiar with it (I'm more familiar with Oracle), however, I deleted the whole snort foder and installed it again without the MS SQL option, and looks like I'm getting closer.

The network interface, preprocessors and plug-ins initialized successfully, as well as rules file./snort.conf parsed.

When initializing rule chains I get an error: Unable to open rules file: .snort.conf or././snort.conf
Fatal Error, Quitting..

Any ideas on that?
